Faculty Expertise

The faculty serving on Instructional Councils are best positioned to provide consistent, expert evaluation of faculty coursework and credentials so as to determine relevance within a specific teaching field. Therefore, Human Resources, Department/Division Chairs, Deans, VPAAs, and other stakeholders must coordinate with the relevant Instructional Councils to determine if the established minimum qualifications are met by candidates for Faculty (Residential, Adjunct, or Dual Enrollment) positions.

Occupational

For occupational disciplines, a combination of education and/or experience is required to qualify. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:

  • Five years of occupational experience in the field to be taught OR
  • Three years of occupational experience in the field to be taught and a Bachelor’s degree or higher OR
  • A Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field OR
  • A Master’s degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credits in the teaching field OR
  • A Master’s degree or higher in any field with a combination of 24 upper division and/or graduate credits in the teaching field

Description

Dental Hygienist or a Dentist license in good standing or the ability to obtain one.

Dental Hygienists and Dentists must be graduates from an institution recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) agency at the time of degree completion.

A minimum of 3 years of Dental Hygiene clinical work experience (30 hours per week) is required.

Rationale

Dental Hygienists and Dentists must be able to possess a license in good standing in order to facilitate didactic and clinical teaching.

Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) agency requires Dental Hygiene and Dental licensure candidates to successfully complete the National Board Dental Hygiene or Dental written examinations and maintain valid licensure.

Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) agency requires all faculty of a dental hygiene program who teach in a didactic course must possess a baccalaureate or higher degree.  All faculty whose teaching is limited to a clinical and dental science laboratory course must possess an associate or higher degree. 

The Dental Health Professions Council has determined that 3 years of full-time clinical practice is the minimum requirement to exhibit competency in safe clinical patient care in the field of Dental Hygiene.

Description

CPR (BLS) healthcare provider level certification in good standing or the ability to obtain one from the American Heart Association.

Clinical faculty must have a Local Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide License in good standing or the ability to obtain one from a Nationally accredited recognized agency.

All faculty must maintain a valid level one Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 fingerprint clearance card, background check, and drug testing. All clinical faculty must meet the health and safety immunization requirements including annual tuberculosis testing, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, COVID-19, and annual Influenza vaccinations. Health and safety requirements are subject to change depending on clinical agency requirements.

Rationale

Dental Hygiene and Dentist licensure requires all clinical faculty to be trained in CPR (BLS) procedures to assist in a medical emergency during clinical patient care instruction.

Industry requirement for all clinical faculty to instruct and guide students during local anesthesia and nitrous oxide administration during patient care in support of safe practices.

All Maricopa Allied Health employees are required to maintain a valid level 1 fingerprint clearance card, background check, and drug testing results.

All clinical faculty must meet the vaccination requirements for health and safety protection from contracting diseases/conditions while working closely with patients and their saliva, blood, along with exposure to aerosol producing procedures.
