Faculty Expertise

The faculty serving on Instructional Councils are best positioned to provide consistent, expert evaluation of faculty coursework and credentials so as to determine relevance within a specific teaching field. Therefore, Human Resources, Department/Division Chairs, Deans, VPAAs, and other stakeholders must coordinate with the relevant Instructional Councils to determine if the established minimum qualifications are met by candidates for Faculty (Residential, Adjunct, or Dual Enrollment) positions.

Academic

A graduate degree is required. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:

  • Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field OR
  • Master’s degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours

The following disciplines meet the requirements to teach in this field:

Women's Studies; Gender Studies; Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies; Feminist Studies; or Queer Studies

Courses outside Women's Studies are subject to review by the WST IC or the WST faculty lead for an individual college. If an applicant's degree is outside the field or subfield, the minimum requirement may be met in the following ways:

1. Masters degree (or higher) in another field of study with eighteen (18) graduate credit hours in Women's Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies, Feminist Studies, and Sexuality Studies, Queer Studies 2. Master degree (or higher) in a related core subject that is relevant to the interdisciplinary nature of gender studies and the completion of a Graduate Certificate in Women's or Gender Studies. If the granting institution's graduate certificate requires less than eighteen (18) credit hours, the supplementary credits may be met by the demonstrated completion of (a) additional graduate coursework in Women's and Gender Studies or (b) additional graduate coursework in gender studies in a related core subject. Credits from the graduate certificate or the graduate certificate with supplemental coursework MUST total eighteen (18) hours or more. 

3. Degree (or higher) in a related core subject that is relevant to the interdisciplinary nature of gender studies and which demonstrates extensive research in Women's or Gender Studies. The demonstrated research focus of study includes two (2) qualifying areas of which BOTH are required. Completion of at least nine (9) hours of graduate coursework in Women and Gender Studies in an accepted prefix within the teaching field (WST Women's Studies, WGS Women and Gender Studies, GWS Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies, WGS Women's Gender, Feminist Studies, and Sexuality Studies, FMST--Feminist Studies) AND Completion of additional graduate credit hours as part of a Masters thesis, dissertation, or capstone research project topic with a focus on Women and Gender Studies. Credits from the graduate coursework and the thesis hours MUST total eighteen (18) hours or more. 

*Core related subjects include: English, Literature, Sociology, Psychology, History, Religion, Education, Interdisciplinary Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Humanities, Ethnic/Cultural Studies (or any sub-field i.e. African/ African-American, Native American, Chicano/a, Asian/ Asian American, etc.).
