Faculty Expertise

The faculty serving on Instructional Councils are best positioned to provide consistent, expert evaluation of faculty coursework and credentials so as to determine relevance within a specific teaching field. Therefore, Human Resources, Department/Division Chairs, Deans, VPAAs, and other stakeholders must coordinate with the relevant Instructional Councils to determine if the established minimum qualifications are met by candidates for Faculty (Residential, Adjunct, or Dual Enrollment) positions.

Academic

A graduate degree is required. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:

  • Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field 
Instructional Council (IC)
Counseling
Faculty Service Area (FSA)
Counseling
Subjects
CAP, CPD, CWE
The following disciplines meet the requirements to teach in this field:

Counseling

Description

1. Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs) 

2. Personality Theories or Human Development (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs) 

3. Testing Theories and Applications (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs), 6. Individual Assessment (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

7. Practicum, supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling.

Rationale

As a service area who meets with students and provides services, these are the minimum standards that the Counseling Faculty will demonstrate both knowledge and skill within. These standards demonstrate minimum preparation and experience in the counseling profession and suggest minimum competence in the assigned area of teaching & service.
